LUISA FERNANDA ALFONSO

Mariachi

©

© Anja Hoppel

This workshop is an enthusiastic sharing of movement material from Masterpiece. In the performance, Luisa Fernanda Alfonso embodies a mariachi called Mr. Sancho. Mr Sancho is an archetype of the stereotypical Latino macho. Mr. Sancho emerges by swiftly alternating between a series of specific movement references and visual languages such as La Singla, Kazuo Ohno, Luis Miguel, Vicente Fernandez, punk rock music videos and our own imagination of an overtly masculine, aggressive, dramatic and virtuous Mariachi.

In this workshop, we will explore, analyse, learn from and discuss each of these references – and search for ways the participants could embody their own Mariachi. One can expect a playful journey of attempts to copy, imitate, and reproduce dance and theatrical material, a humorous and physically demanding experience accompanied by Mariachi music.
