IAN KALER / PARASOL

Ecto-Fictions

For his new group choreography, Ian Kaler revisits his 2010 graduation production Save a horse ride a cowboy. Kaler, who found his love for horses at the age of 6, and the PARASOL participants will explore connections between his choreographic work and the interaction and (nonverbal) communication with horses and contextualize them within the movement practice of riding.

Ecto-Fictions will develop a fictitious documentary stage narrative that will address questions concerning togetherness and cohesion. The title already alludes to the quality of an ‘external’ perception and reflects on processes of projection and ascription in the interaction and encounter with animals. Ecto-Fictions represents the attempt to create a space for enhanced and utopian visions of corpo*realit*ies, where attributions and classifications can be studied.

    Ian Kaler

studied Transmedia Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and was one of the first students to complete the pilot study programme Contemporary Dance, Context, Choreography at the Inter-University Centre for Dance (HZT) at Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). Since 2010, Kaler has worked on serial choreographic works with different artists, which are always complemented by (visual) media artworks. From 2015 to 2019, he worked on his choreographic series o.T. in collaboration with music producer Planningtorock and guests. The world premiere of ON THE CUSP, a choreography for 16 dancers from the Cullberg ensemble, took place at Tanzquartier Wien in 2019. His latest solo POINTS OF DEPARTURE Hyphen was shown at ImPulsTanz in 2021. In addition to his choreographic series, Kaler develops workshops that function as research platforms for mixed-ability professional dancers and for artists with a non-dance background.

PARASOL – a dance group of TQW

Starting in 2022, two renowned choreographers – this year’s are Ian Kaler and Alix Eynaudi – will continuously work with a select group of five young dancers on a TQW Halle G production for three months each year. Further training will complement the artistic practice, and artists will be embedded in TQW’s diverse program of productions, theory lectures and body & performance practices. A hybrid artistic – and paid – training project for the dance scene in Vienna and beyond , but also a mobile network of relations, an experimental setting with focus on the vital needs of ensemble productions: solidarity, collective experience, conviviality. 2022 participants: Alex Bailey, Camilla Schielin, Júlia Rúbies Subirós, Shahrzad Nazarpour, Theresa Scheinecker Find out more
