IAN KALER

You are song, to me

©

Ian Kaler, You are song, to me, Videostill

Ian Kaler’s video installation explores trans male experiences and examines the voice after a voice break caused by testosterone treatment. The presentation features artist and performer Romeo Roxman Gatt – on screen and in a live performance.

In his artistic practice, Ian Kaler develops interdisciplinary stage and video works. His films are influenced by choreography, and his choreographies by film. The video piece You are song, to me, co-produced by TQW, marks the beginning of a new series that centers on storytelling of trans-male experience and collaboration. Together with artist, poet, and performer Romeo Roxman Gatt, Kaler explores states of suspension through movement underwater and working with the voice after a testosterone-induced voice break. In an intimate email exchange between the two protagonists, the film blurs the lines between text, moving images, and music. Cinematography emphasizes the gaze and examines the staging and embodiment of intimacy and belonging beyond fetishization and exposure.

The TQW presents the work in a site-specific video installation and with performative activations by Ian Kaler and Romeo Roxman Gatt at the opening and closing events.
