LIGIA LEWIS

Canceled: Workshop on Stage

©

@ Brian Hartley

+++ Unfortunately, the Workshop on Stage by Ligia Lewis is canceled  +++

Inspired by critical fabulation and Afropessimist thought, this workshop explores the psychic and physical dimensions of moving in and against a racist landscape in the European theatre. Adopting methods of critical inquiry from thinkers like Saidiya Hartman and David Marriott, Ligia Lewis hopes to disentangle movement from invention and instead couple dance with thinking and action. The workshop takes the theatrical term of “corpsing” into account, asking how moving away from theatrical mastery toward an otherwise unspectacular everydayness (not to be misinterpreted as the canonical postmodern quotidian), inviting antagonism and fantastical nothingness into the mix of expressive possibility. This workshop is particularly focused on Black embodiment and the Black “nothing and everything”.

  • Artist Bio

    Ligia Lewis

works as an artist, choreographer, dancer, and director. She presents her work on stage, in a gallery or museum, through film or exhibition format. Lewis’s works, marked by physical and emotional intensities, stage collisions of comedy and tragedy while sliding between the familiar and unfamiliar. Confronting history’s ghostly traces, memory, and the un/known, she treats the body as a site where sonic and visual metaphors materialize the poetic and dissonant. For Lewis, choreography is the movement of ideas across bodies meticulously conceived, crafted, and directed – a political act, a writing against the grain of the racial regime of representationalism and (black) erasure.
