Week One – Contemporary Training and Improvisation

This section is basically made up of three parts:

articulation & mobility

I will guide the participants through a gentle exploration of mobilising their joints, differentiating internal and external tendencies of movement and the effort we undertake to execute them. We become aware of the moulding quality of our gestures and how they shape our articulations.

endurance & flow
In this part of the class we will not stop moving for about half an hour, although my input during that stretch of time will vary. The aim is to deal with the challenge of organising the breathing and the muscular effort in such a way that moving without stopping becomes like an underlying state on top of which other tasks can be put into practice and/or explored.

fragmentation, inversion & integration
Especially this part of the class is inspired by visual art work featuring surrealistic, distorted, fragmented or even abstract representations of the body. I will be very clear and prepared in my choice of examples, but the participants will find their own approach in dealing with the suggestions. At the end of the session there will be time to come back to oneself and go into resonance with the experiences.

Week Two – Partner Work and Composition Through Touch

Similar to the contemporary class, we will start with a specific functional theme of the body or a prominent body part that can be explored by touching a partner with the fingers to get a deeper and intuitive understanding of our supporting structure. Within the flow of the session we will gradually blur the boundaries between our own body and the other body and visualise sculptural images from external sources. Internalising these images, they will serve as inspiration for us to create similar shapes together with our partners in a series of try-outs that lead towards organising these images. I am fascinated by the fact that the most complex and beautiful partner constellations suddenly emerge from an ease of two or more bodies moving as one. How can we subsequently process, memorise and integrate such information as tools?
