Tino Sehgal’s This Variation is a choreographic masterpiece that rocked the dOCUMENTA (13) at its premiere in 2012. Called “addictive” by The Guardian, it left visitors “breathless and overwhelmed” and continues to do so. For the first time now in Vienna, this intriguing work takes shape in the shared space of a dark room. Immersed in sound, visitors are guided by shifting energetic intensities as dancers appear, recede, and reorganize. There is no stage, no objects, and no single viewpoint – only an unfolding choreography made to be experienced from within. Moving between intimacy and intensity, using rhythm, proximity, voice, and speech, This Variation builds a world that, like the biological world, repeats form with infinite variation. The work is less something to watch than something to enter. Here, one’s own attention and presence influence the flow and dynamic of a dance that is at once formally organized and yet porous and responsive.

Artist Bio
Tino Sehgal
is an artist of German and Indian descent, based in Berlin. Renowned as one of the most important artists of his generation, Tino Sehgal’s critical acclaim derives from his radical artistic practice that takes the form of “constructed situations”: live encounters between visitors and those enacting the work. Their ephemeral beauty rests in the fleeting specificity of the encounter, where players often engage visitors through active participation in constructing the piece. Sehgal’s abandoning of material production in favor of lived experience is nevertheless achieved with a sensitivity to classical considerations of form, composition, and space, grounded not only in the history of dance but also western traditions of sculpture and installation. Sehgal’s work has been presented internationally in prestigious institutions in both visual art and dance contexts. In 2016, he was the mentor of danceWEB at Impulstanz and the recipient of the Golden Lion at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. His work was last shown in Vienna at the Kunsthistorisches Museum as part of the Beethoven moves exhibition in 2020.
