Nobody: Now Bodies places embodiment at the center of knowledge production. Developed jointly by Mareike Schwarz (AkBild), Isabel Lewis (TQW) and Christina Gillinger (TQW), the lecture series explores body practices in contemporary visual and performative art from crip, queer and gender-theoretical perspectives. The course analyses how understanding emerges not only cognitively, but also through sensory and movement-based experience and uses this approach to further investigate how bodies are normalized, disciplined or aestheticized.

Structured around five key practices – performing, encoding, assembling, cripping and morphing – the series moves between theory, artistic positions and shared practice. Sessions combine close readings of artworks and texts with adaptive and inclusive movement practice, creating a collaborative learning space to critically examine concepts and trace their political and theoretical genealogies. Participants will additionally engage with selected events from TQW’s program, including Tino Sehgal’s This Variation and the Rakete Festival.

The sessions will alternate between being hosted at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and TQW Studios and are open to all with or without official student status.

    Mareike Schwarz

is an art scholar and curator whose work explores questions of belonging in modern and contemporary art – specifically, who is included in art history and under what conditions art and artistic production are shared. She currently teaches at the Institute for Art Theory and Cultural Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Previously, she was a postgraduate researcher in the EU-funded project METROMOD at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich. In various collaborative constellations, she has curated exhibitions such as the group exhibition SUCK MY CODE! (2025/26), which addresses digital corporeality between exploitation and emancipation.

    Isabel Lewis

is a Dominican-American artist and choreographer whose work takes on many different formats: from lecture performances and workshops to listening sessions, installations, publications, and what she has named hosted occasions. She has created projects around open-source technology and dance improvisation, social dances as cultural storage systems, collaborative choreographic formats, bodily techniques and ecological thinking, and rapping as an embodied speech act. Her works have been presented internationally at major institutions and biennials in the contexts of contemporary art, music, dance, and theater since 2003. Lewis led the Klasse für Performative Künste at the Fine Art Academy in Leipzig (HGB) from 2021 to 2025 and currently serves as Artistic Director of TQW together with Rio Rutzinger.

    Christina Gillinger

is a dance and theater scholar and has been working at Tanzquartier Wien since 2002, where she is currently responsible for the library, publications, and research. She is a lecturer at the University of Applied Arts and the Institute for Theater, Film, and Media Studies. After studying theater studies/philosophy, dance, and fine arts in Vienna, Paris, and Salzburg, she realized her own artistic projects and collaborated on the Border-Dancing Across Time project.
