SOROUR DARABI

Known for their radical and deeply moving pieces, which combine contemporary discourses on identity with traditional as well as original narrative forms, Sorour Darabi have managed to establish themselves in the international performance scene. The starting point of their latest creation, Mowgli, is the title of a recent song by French rap duo PNL, where the reference to the jungle denounces the still prevalent projection of wildness onto the body of young citizens with a migrant background. And yet, the image of the jungle also gives the opportunity to re-appropriate from within: the possibility of inventing a different law, opposed to the one of the city. Set in the obscurity of a fictional night, each appearance in Mowgli is a wild experience: choreography, poetry, storytelling, fairy tales, the lyrics of Iranian singer Googoosh and those by PNL. Through them, Sorour Darabi construct a collection of lived and fantasized stories, blending the themes of chosen family, melancholy. Becoming wild is a political project.

Artist Bio
Sorour Darabi
is a self-taught Iranian artist who live and work between Paris and Berlin. Working actively in Iran, they were a part of the underground organisation ICCD, whose festival Untimely (Teheran) presented Darabi’s work prior to their departure for France. During their studies at the CCN de Montpellier, they created the solo piece Subject to Change, a performance that questions transformation with regards to time and one’s cohabitation with an environment. In 2016, they created Farci.e, a solo piece dealing with notions of language, gender identity and sexuality, presented at the Festival Montpellier Danse. In 2018, they created Savušun, an ode to affect, to vulnerability and to beings who are affected, which deals with questions of grief, fear, and suffering and which was inspired by the mourning ceremonies of the Muharram. The last two pieces were presented at Wiener Festwochen in 2019. In addition to their work on Mowgli, Sorour Darabi also work on their new production Natural Drama, co-produced by Tanzquartier Wien. -
