EISA JOCSON (PH)

Introduction to Macho Dancing

©

(c) Giannina Ottiker

This workshop is an introduction to the basic techniques of macho dancing. These techniques have been distilled and codified by Eisa Jocson through her research and by touring Macho Dancer. Jocson will lead participants through the sensual yet physically demanding vocabulary, including macho posture and stance, undulations, macho walk, knee swivels, poses, mannerisms and use of the gaze. The physical principles of macho dancing will be explored, beginning with the illusion of weight and volume, as well as viscosity in time and space.

  • Artist Bio

    Eisa Jocson

born in the Philippines, was trained as a visual artist, with a background in ballet and pole dancing. Her first public art interventions started when she would climb up and “tag” public flagpoles. Later, she expanded to investigating the social economics, mobility, and the gendered body in the entertainment industry.

Her artistic practice involves embodying personae such as a pole dancer, a macho dancer, a Japanese hostess and a Disney princess. Poised between observing popular culture and subversive power relations, these works confront our perceptions of sexuality, gender formation and seduction politics.
