ISABEL LEWIS & EIKE WITTROCK

finally letׄ’s talk FORM!

finally let’s talk FORM! is a public workshop series co-hosted by dance historian Eike Wittrock and artist-choreographer Isabel Lewis that asks a deceptively simple question: Is it still interesting to talk about form today?

Drawing from histories of modern, postmodern, and contemporary dance – where questions of structure, abstraction, composition, and “pure movement” have surfaced again and again – the workshop looks at how form has been embraced, resisted, exploded, and reassembled. Together with participants, Wittrock and Lewis will revisit modernist debates around form and autonomy and examine how these live on (or fall apart) in current artistic production, where choreography often entangles social, political, and affective realities.

Through conversation, shared reading and listening, and simple movement tasks, the workshop opens a space to think, feel, and speculate collectively about what “form” might mean for contemporary dance and performance now.

  • Artist Bio

    Isabel Lewis

is a Dominican-American artist and choreographer whose work takes on many different formats: from lecture performances and workshops to listening sessions, installations, publications, and what she has named hosted occasions. She has created projects around open-source technology and dance improvisation, social dances as cultural storage systems, collaborative choreographic formats, bodily techniques and ecological thinking, and rapping as an embodied speech act. Her works have been presented internationally at major institutions and biennials in the contexts of contemporary art, music, dance, and theater since 2003. Lewis led the Klasse für Performative Künste at the Fine Art Academy in Leipzig (HGB) from 2021 to 2025 and currently serves as Artistic Director of TQW together with Rio Rutzinger.

    Eike Wittrock

is Professor of Dance Studies at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna. In his research and teaching practice, he explores (queer) aesthetics in local dance and performance histories. In an international research project, he is currently working with colleagues to investigate how LGBTIQ* movements in Germany and Austria have contributed to democratization.
