Asynchronies

In this workshop, we will develop a unique and alternative perspective on the history of 20th-century dance. Which eras, decades, cultural spheres, and continents give rise to which dances, and in what contexts? How are dance trends connected to the social circumstances that usually give rise to them at the same time, yet are viewed as “asynchronous” depending on their region of origin? Is there even such a thing as a mobilization of bodies that isn’t shaped by a specific social context? And what about our own bodies?

Engaging with dance “history(ies)” requires approaches that go beyond the canonized history of dance, neatly divided into styles and aesthetics. It must take into account the historical interconnections with individual bodies, their spaces of experience and origin, and their habitual practices and enculturations. Understanding these bodies as transnational, powerful, and ongoing producers of these histories is one of the focal points of this workshop week.

Open Call
This free workshop is aimed at professional artists in the performing arts as well as art enthusiasts who wish to explore the history of dance. Attendance on all 5 days is required to participate.
