Salon Souterrain transfers the bourgeois concept of the salon into the reality of the 21st century. Together with her team and guests, Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe addresses social issues in an artistic format. The edition Echoes of Numbers explores the duality of statistics as a tool for knowledge production and as an instrument of control.

Seven years ago, artist Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe initiated Salon Souterrain in response to the increasing exclusionary dynamics that seem to have become the hallmark of our societies in Europe. Since then, the event has provided a space for multidisciplinary exchange and discourse in an artistic format in an intimate setting of sofas, carpets, and plants. The latest edition, organized by Wien Modern in collaboration with TQW, will take place over two evenings in the glamorous setting of the Palais Schönborn-Batthyány. With a large contingent of guests from a wide range of disciplines and styles, the evening will put our relationship with numbers to the test. Salon Souterrain: Echoes of Numbers explores the multiple faces of statistics: both mirror and mask, tool of understanding and weapon of power, promise of transparency and maker of fiction. Between music, philosophy, and performance, in a dialogue blending debates and sensitive experiences, Salon Souterrain questions how numbers shape our lives, guide our desires, and sometimes make their way even into our dreams.

  • Artist Bio

    Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe

was born in Kinshasa (DRC), grew up in France and pursued artistic studies. As an artist, choreographer, and stage director, she works with a variety of forms: performance, choreography, film, interactive and generative, as well as different dramaturgies and spaces such as installations and stages. She is interested in the emergence of new forms of otherness and the singular relationships and languages they give rise to. Her projects are transdisciplinary and collective, aiming to create shared research spaces between performance art and social sciences. In addition to the Artspace Château Rouge in the 12th district, she founded the Salon Souterrain in 2018. Parallel to this curatorial work, Tambwe has presented her choreographic projects at the Wiener Festwochen, ImPulsTanz Festival, brut, WUK, Kunstraum Niederoesterreich, donaufestival, and Steirischer Herbst, among others.
