ANDREW CHAMPLIN

Deconstructing Ballet

©

Andrew Champlin

In this workshop, dancers deconstruct ballet’s visual aesthetic to get to the core of its technical tools. We work with basic elements from ballet – shapes, movements, rhythms, transitions – and explore how they feel relevant to our own bodies, through a deconstruction method drawn from Janet Panetta’s teachings: sometimes with partners and touch, sometimes through observation and analysis. We then bring these elements back into the repertoire, experiencing them anew.

The workshop is split in half: deconstruction practice, then a conventional ballet class with barre, center work, and traveling sequences.

Our aim is to deepen personal knowledge, musical awareness, and performance skills, question assumptions about ballet's visual aesthetic, and think about classical embodiment from the inside out.

We’ll also glimpse Janet Panetta’s pedagogical legacy and hear anecdotes from dancers who trained with her in NYC since the 1970s.
