Probably all of us have seen images that depict the unfree, but what about representations of freedom? And where can we find the actual promise of freedom in contemporary pictures and artworks? A provocative question, but active political consciousness mostly thrives on a critical mode of inquiry. Monuments like the Statue of Liberty in New York do not suffice as symbols one can belief in anymore. In his latest book, Freiheit ist kein Bild, Jörg Heiser analyses representational strategies that create a sense of solidarity among those who are at odds with what it means to be oppressed and unfree under the current status quo. The lecture will be accompanied by Oscar Chan Yik Long’s drawings, making this a dance of free and unfree spirits.

Artist Bio
Jörg Heiser
is an art critic, curator and musician. He is professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Universität der Künste Berlin, as well as dean and managing director of the Institute for Art in Context. He was a senior editor at the art magazine frieze for almost 20 years. Since 1997, he has been a regular contributor to Süddeutsche Zeitung, as well as Die Republik, Art Agenda, among others. He has written several books, including Plötzlich diese Übersicht. Was gute zeitgenössische Kunst ausmacht (Ullstein/Claassen, 2007), Doppelleben Kunst und Popmusik (Fundus/Philo Fine Arts, 2016), and, most recently, Freiheit ist kein Bild (Textem/Edition Uhlenhorst Hamburg, 2021). Since 2014 he has curated several group exhibitions (including Romantic Conceptualism, Kunsthalle Nürnberg and Bawag Foundation Wien, 2007/2008, catalogue) and was co-curator of the 2018 Busan Biennale in South Korea. He is also a member of music group La Stampa, whose second album was released by Vinyl Factory, London, in 2018. -
