ALBERTO CORTÉS

Analphabet

© Alejandra Amere

At sunset on Gulpiyuri beach, a romantic ghost called Analphabet appears to a couple of male lovers who have just been arguing loudly. The ghost suspended over the sea sings songs to the lovers and narrates its story. Analphabet is a ghost trapped in the wounds of flesh whose appearance reveals the mistreatment to which we subject ourselves in the structure we call “romantic couple.” Analphabet’s story opens up the box of intergender violence and exposes the need to take extreme care in queer relationships, which can be marked by patriarchal inheritances.

An internationally recognized shooting star, Alberto Cortés, gives form to Analphabet. The writer, dramaturg, theater director, and performer uses the entire expressive capacity of his body to evoke the images and poetics of German romanticism. Referencing Goethe, Hölderlin, and Novalis, among others, Cortés’ performance is at once inflected with Andalusian character and the depth of the bleeding heart of the Basque Country.

  • Artist Bio

    Alberto Cortés,

born in 1983 in Malaga, is a stage director, playwright, and performer of his own drifts. In 2009, he began his theatrical journey with a bastardized and peripheral dramaturgy that has become increasingly wild over time. He creates pieces in different formats and disciplines in an attempt to continue to have hope in the intangible and the human. He has worked in international contexts and festivals such as Kunstenfestivaldesarts and Festival d’Automne in Paris, as well as in numerous theatres in Spain over the years. He has published Los montes son tuyos (2022) and Siempre vengo de noche (2024), which contain the texts of his latest works. His texts have also been translated into French and Italian. Today, he inhabits the stage from a romantic relationship with the audience.
